Certification remains valid for three years and is renewable.

Course Overview:

The LEVA Level 2 course builds on the concepts of the LEVA Level 1 course. The public expectation today is that if a crime occurs, there will be video/audio of the incident. There is a significant, specific skill set that investigators need to PROPERLY handle and process the digital multimedia evidence that gets collected. If the DME is not handled and processed carefully, according to best practices, the video/audio might not be interpreted accurately. This course exposes students to more advanced theory and hands-on techniques that conform to the Best Practices for the Acquisition and Processing of Digital Multimedia Evidence (DME).

Class begins each day at 8 AM.  On Friday, class will be dismissed by 3:30 PM.

LOCATION: The course will be hosted by the Nottinghamshire Police and held in partnership at Nottingham Trent University, School of Science & Technology, Clifton Lane, Nottingham NG11 8NS.

Course Overview:

The increased use of digital video systems by the general public has made digital multimedia evidence (DME) a significant and integral part of modern criminal and civil investigations. Since there is no standard video recording system in use, the need for trained individuals who know how to properly recover this type of evidence has increased. Properly acquiring DME is crucial, as all other processes or use of the video is impacted by accuracy of the recovery. This course introduces and provides a fundamental understanding of DME, introduces the types of systems likely to be encountered, discusses legal issues related to DME, and focuses on the proper recovery of DME. Level 1 prepares first responders such as officers, detectives, and crime scene investigators who may be responsible for collecting video evidence with the strong foundation needed for the correct recovery of the evidence along with methods for accurately disseminating information derived from the recovered video. This class is also the first step for those students pursuing the Certified Forensic Video Technician (CFVT) or Certified Forensic Video Analysts (CFVA) certification and prepares the students for advanced classes in the field.

Who Should Attend?

This three-day course is specifically designed for experts (and experts in training) in ANY area of expertise. Specific examples and moot court practice will focus on the areas of expertise represented by course participants.

Overview

An expert witness is a person with expertise in a particular field that exceeds the knowledge level of the trier of fact and who applies that expertise in a legal setting. Becoming an expert witness in any field is a significant accomplishment. It means that through your education, training and experience you have gained knowledge in a particular field of endeavor that is superior to that of the trier of fact.

From both a criminal and civil trial perspective, it is essential that a forensic expert be able to communicate that vital information in an effective and compelling manner so as to maximize its value. The ability to do that is rarely innate and is something that can be learned and practiced. This course is designed to teach experts how to become effective expert witnesses.

This highly rated course is dynamic and combines lectures, demonstration and moot court practice.

Location: New York State Police Academy, 1220 Washington Avenue, Building 24, Albany NY 12226
